THE WINNERS! TSF short story writing competition for 9-14 year olds

We are delighted to announce the winners of our short story writing competition for 9-14 year olds.

All entries were judged by celebrated children's author, David Almond and our own John Cobb and Sarah Kemp.

"In making my choices, sometimes it was the tiniest detail that stood out to me - a snatch of dialogue, a powerful sentence; sometimes it was the voice, or the overall story shape". David Almond

A special message from David:

"I enjoyed reading all of the entries and was inspired by the range of approaches. Not 'winning' can be seen as a disappointment, but I'm not sure that I'd have won any competitions when I was growing up. Don't be discouraged.

I want to congratulate everyone who entered, to thank them, to wish them all well in future writing and reading.

Special congratulations to the winners whose entries I particularly enjoyed.

Congratulations and thanks to the teachers too, who do such wonderful work in inspiring children and bringing children and books - and plays! - together".

The writing competition was a collaboration between David Almond and TSF to accompany a national tour of Heaven Eyes. The competition was open to all young people aged 9-14 years who had seen Heaven Eyes during its 2017 tour; entries were to be be titled The Journey, be an original piece of fiction, and no longer than 1000 words.

Our thanks to all those who entered and congratulations to the winners!
