MAKE DO AND MEND

Touching and joyful stories of everyday life in the 1950s,
told through drama, live music and songs.
Language: English

"Fabulous!" "A super performance and very moving" "A wonderful play very enjoyable" - Audience comments at Premiere in Haltwhistle Library.
Make Do and Mend offers a touching and joyful kaleidoscope of everyday life in post-war Britain. In 1952 Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, Britain acquired its first nuclear weapons, and tea rationing came to an end. Against this changing political and social backdrop, ordinary people worked to rebuild the country after the second world war.

Make Do and Mend uses drama, live music, songs and photography to tell the true stories of everyday folk in the early 1950s: a travelling salesman, farmer and pharmacist, young teachers and housewives striving to create a better future for their children. We hear of women's struggles to gain equal pay, the Tory councillor with dreams of building new social housing in Byker, as well as the pub landlady and her pig!

Created and performed by members of the Adult Community Drama Group and directed by Théâtre Sans Frontières.

Make Do and Mend will tour North East England and Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in October 2023.
